This course will be devoted to the theory and practice of communication in a range of contexts related to healthcare and human well-being. Theoretical models of the process of communication are applied to the participants and contents involved in providing care to those in need and assisting people who might otherwise be excluded. A few traditions of analyzing language in its context will be described, including discourse analysis, conversation analysis, ethnomethodology, narrative analysis. Examples of how they may be applied to naturally-occurring data will be considered.
