In this BA seminar we will look at the use of language (in particular the English language) and the visual modality in the urban landscape. We will cover the following topics:

(1) meaning making through street art,

(2) the use of languages in the world cities (e.g. London, Tokyo and New Delhi),

(3) the use of language and visual mode in street protests.

The study of Linguistic Landscape (LL) started as an exploration of different languages on public signs in the streets and inside buildings. First the focus was on how different ethnic or national groups are represented in the public space. For instance, in Wales the road signs are both in Welsh and in English. Later LL research started to expand and included all forms of written communication in the city.

During the seminar students will learn

(1) how to critically read academic articles,

(2) how to write a literature review (= chapter 1)

(3) how to gather data (= chapter 2)

(4) how to analyze data in a systematic way (= chapter 3).

Students are expected to read and understand the suggested literature, participate in classroom tasks (written, oral and group work), solve exercises on Moodle and write the BA paper.

They will be evaluated on the basis of their written work (chapter 1 – end of sem. I; the rest of the BA paper in sem. II).
