15-SEMLIC-12

The seminar will be devoted to examining the work of selected 20th-century Irish poets and dramatists within the relevant historical and cultural context. Poets to be read range from William Butler Yeats to Seamus Heaney; playwrights to be (re)visited range from Samuel Beckett to Marina Carr. The weekly reading load consists of one play or a selection of poems by an Irish writer. The first semester’s core content builds upon the previous year’s proseminar (although having attended the proseminar is no necessary prerequisite). A typical session consists of a brief presentation of relevant autobiographical/social/literary context, following by a discussion of the assigned text(s). In the cases of plays, the discussion is often supplemented by clips of performances.
