15-PROSEM101-3BA-11

This proseminar is devoted to the dictionary treatment of lexical items which are notoriously difficult to describe: scientific terms, neologisms, slang, and so-called sensitive words (connected with race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability etc). We will look at how these are defined, translated, exemplified, and what labels, if any, are used to signal their special status. Various ethical issues will be considered which stem from the task of presenting such words objectively yet without offending the sensibilities of dictionary users.

Credits will be given on the basis of attendance, participation in class discussion, and individual presentations.
