This course covers philosophical and ideological currents that formed the background of American culture. These are as follows:
1. Imagery of arrival in colonies and new territories
2. Religious revivals
3. American Enlightenment
4. Slavery and its ideology
5. Utopian and reformist movements in the 1850s
6. Expansionism and mythology of the frontier
7. The Civil War and its rememberance
8. American ideology of war, strategic doctrines, global expansionism
9. Pragmatism
10. Secessionist and isolationist movements
11. Neopragmatism and technocracy after 1945
12. Vietnam war and Vietnam syndrome
This is a survery lecture, so you just sit back and hopefully enjoy, but occasionally I might ask for your examples and opinions, inviting discussion.
The credits and evaluation will be based on a written assignment in moodle.
