The key aim of this course is to assist students in writing their MA dissertations in English literary studies. The course is designed to acquaint literary students with the typical elements of an MA thesis, such as introduction, conclusion, theoretical and analytical chapters, and the general layout of the thesis. Students will learn how to quote primary and paraphrase secondary sources, write an introduction and conclusion, abide by the proper academic register and style, and avoid common writing pitfalls. The students will practise logical, analytical thinking and argumentation techniques (written and oral exercises, work in groups) to be able to better understand the literary and cultural texts they chose for their theses. They will also gain techniques to stay objective, avoid bias, and build well-reasoned, evidence-backed arguments both in speech and in writing. The course involves varied teaching methods, for example, brainstorming sessions, mind mapping exercises, presentations, discussion in groups and writing assignments.
