The Indigenous languages of the U.S., Canada, and Greenland are fascinating in their diversity and complexity, and the ways in which they differ from the languages of Europe. They challenge common assumptions about language concerning, e.g., the nature of words and lexical categories. This course is an introduction to their structural diversity and sociocultural context, including such topics as distribution and classification, sound systems, patterns of word structure, language contact, loss and revitalization, boarding schools, and stereotypes of the ‘Indian’. The final grade is based on a 20-minute presentation (90%) and class participation (10%).
