African American Dance
Like music, dance plays an important role in African American culture. It provides a gateway into understanding of the complexities of African American Identity, that will furthermore reveal important aspects of its significance to American Studies. In this course students will first explore specific dances and their usages in West African tribes, followed by their significance to slaves during the Diaspora, and finally following their emancipation from slavery to present day. Students will learn the synergy that exists between dance and music, and how they both have evolved into great forms of artistic creation as well as entertainment appreciated worldwide.
