The theoretical framework for this seminar are Linguistic Landscape Studies, which traditionally focus on the use of language on the signs visible in the public space. These signs can be rather static, like street name plaques, shop advertisements, tourist information, but they may also be more transitory, like street art, inscriptions on T-shirts, tattoos or placards carried by protestors at various demonstrations. In this proseminar we will review a number of studies showing how ideology and affect are inscribed, debated and erased in the cityscape. Students will also be encouraged to present their own mini case studies on topic of their choice, but related to the seminar theme.
