This course is an introduction to the main concepts and issues in morphology, i.e. the study of word structure as well as the relationship between words and their constituent parts and meaning. We will also deal with the implications of morphological analysis for the study of other components of language structure: phonology (sound changes), semantics (semantic relations), lexicon (word formation) and syntax (morphosyntax). While the course will focus on English morphology, data will also be drawn from other languages. The main topics include: words and their types; types and ordering of morphemes; inflection and derivation; grammatical categories; compound words; morphological typology; and grammaticalization and loss of morphology.
