Most pop entertainment is American-produced, and seems somehow international. But when pop culture is, or feels, specifically American (as much of it seems international), it is dominated by a set of preoccupations and themes that seem peculiar, exotic, sometimes slightly insane. They are historically conditioned, mostly by the Puritan heritage and by frontier experience. The list below is “soft” in the sense of being possibly general and inclusive, at the cost of being unspecific. For each theme, there are some examples and topics for discussion. The range of examples covers a possibly wide spectrum of “texts of culture”, which means a variety of things other than narrative fiction and film. A building, a cosmetic package, or a cooking recipe, or a space mission, is also a text of culture.
