The aim is for the students to develop a consistent, fully intelligible pronunciation based on native phonemic and allophonic models.

It is important for the resulting accent to be “transparent” to a broad range of listeners, i.e. it should not attract undue attention as a result of the presence of (sociolinguistically) marked L1 or L2 features.

More specifically, upon successfully completing the course, the student should:

(1) Know the phonemic shape of words within a basic English vocabulary, including word stress. This includes the phonemic shape of inflected forms (e.g. past tense and plural suffixes).

(2) Be able to recognize all the phonemic contrasts of English perceptively, and to implement them in their own production.

(3) Show an understanding of the allophony of English phonemes in perception and an ability to implement it in production.

(4) Be able to work on their pronunciation individually as well as monitor and correct their own pronunciation.
