Course Objectives

The objective of the 1MA PNJA Writing Program is to help you consolidate your skills as a critical reader, thinker and writer. Class work and assignments are designed to provide you with strategies for successful writing in English in both academic and professional settings. The course content will focus on helping you to plan, develop (revise), and write both argumentative and expository essays and a thesis-driven research paper on a theme to be chosen early in the year. You will also develop your ability to summarize and paraphrase information. By the end of the year, you should have developed a clearer, better-organized, and more accurate and persuasive writing style. You should also feel more comfortable critiquing your and others’ writing and using reference sources, which will help you successfully write a high-quality master’s thesis.

In the first semester, goals include preliminary research for a mini-research essay on a chosen theme, writing one or two summaries, and writing and revising three in-class [mock exam] essays and one take-home essay. In early May, a portfolio comprising one research essay, one summary and one in-class writing assignment will be submitted for external evaluation. The Final Examination will consist of a 400+ word essay written in response to a set of at least two prompts (statistical, textual or graphic) over 2 hours without the aid of a dictionary.
