This seminar will introduce you to the Germanic language family as a whole, concentrating on the oldest known Germanic languages: Gothic, Runic and (Classical) Old Norse, Old English, Old Frisian, Old Saxon, and Old High German. After introducing the principles of historical linguistics and surveying the main features of reconstructed Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Germanic, we will examine each of the older Germanic languages in turn, focusing on their most important features and their similarities to and differences from the other languages. We will also discuss some of the major problems in Germanic linguistics, including subgrouping, diffusion and dialect contact, umlaut, and syntactic change.
