This course is an introduction to the main concepts and issues in morphology, i.e. the study of word structure and the relationship between words and their constituent parts and meaning. The course is also concerned with the implications for the analysis of other components of language structure, i.e. phonology (sound changes), semantics (semantic relations), lexicon (word-formation) and syntax (morphosyntax). While the course will focus on English morphology, data will also be drawn from other languages, in particular Polish. The main topics include: words and their types; types and ordering of morphemes; morphological typology; inflection and derivation; grammatical categories; compound words; grammaticalization and loss of morphology; and morphology of borrowings.
