An introduction to Afrikaans films & poetry in post-apartheid South Africa.
The course is comprised of a series of lectures starting at 1994 when South Africa became a democratic country. A variety of Afrikaans films & poetry will be analysed to examine how identities have been interpreted and also investigating where and how identities have been made absent to match particular ideological claims. The proseminar is premised on a selection of films and poems that invoke a sense of identity and their positioning in the historic moment / form and in which they emerge.
The aim is
to give the student an understanding of how post-apartheid Afrikaans films
& poetry shaped history and was shaped by the social, political, economic
and cultural landscape.
