This course is concerned with social justice: how we can talk about it, work for it and embody the change we wish for in the world by investigating canonical literary texts of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Drawing on (eco)feminism, disability studies, critical race theory and animal studies, we will interrogate the so-called -isms of difference e.g. racism, sexism, ableism and speciesism at their inception – in the early modern texts that still resonate with modern audiences.
