Syllabus
Week 1: Types of intralingual communication: 1) oral, written, mixed (a vista), 2) models of
lingual communication (professional, semi-professional, non-professional, mixed model).
Method: Modern Greek written and oral texts in various communication acts – discussion and
overview on the basis of personal experiences.
Week 2: Comprehension and interpretation/reformulation/re-expression of various written
messages-texts. Phases, methods. Exercise: abstracts of oral/written texts, reformulation of
messages-texts, switching channel of communication (oral to written and vice versa),
reorganization of messages-texts.
Week 3: Notations systems: what are and how to use them? Exercises on Modern Greek
acoustic and audio-video material.
Week 4: Reformulation of messages-texts among various styles, registers and genres. Exercises
on Modern Greek texts.
Week 5: Intralingual translation and interpretation as an introductory phase for multilingual
translation and interpretation. Case studies and discussion.
After course: written and oral exam.
Part 1: written exam – i) reformulation of professional text into non-professional text & ii)
rewriting text form one register to another.
Part 2: oral exam – i) note-taking from acoustic and/or audio-visual material, 2) reinterpretation
of acoustic and/or audio-visual material.
Module aim
• acquisition of practical competences in intralingual translation and interpretation, especially in
Moden Greek
• to familiarize with various models of lingual communication (professional, semi-professional,
non-professional, mixed model) based on written and oral texts (messages)
• to get acquainted with notation systems for interpreting
• to get acquainted with textual operations (reformulation, abstraction, reordering information
etc.)
• to reformulate written and oral texts in Modern Greek
• to localize specialised Modern Greek written and oral texts (legal, pharmaceutical) in
reference to other communicative systems of certain languages and culture
• to get acquainted with sources of knowledge required to interpret specialised texts (LSP) and
to know how to evaluate them

• Good command of general Modern Greek at least B2 level.
• Finished course of General linguistics.
• Basic knowledge about theory of translation and interpretation.
• General knowledge about lingual communication: types of messages, participants of
communication acts.
• General knowledge about language, register, style.
• Good knowledge of English which enables to read and understand references.
• A good will to cooperate and to undertake customized tasks.
• Communicative orientation and general interest for multilingual communication.
